Sabres 2, Oilers 1
Daniel Briere lifts the Sabres to another victory at home against the Edmonton Oilers. The Sabres’ co-captain rips a shot over ex-Sabre Dwayne Roloson’s shoulder only 62 seconds into overtime to give Buffalo its fourth-straight win. The Sabres had not beaten the Oilers on home-ice since hockey has been played in HSBC Arena. Maxim Afinogenov ties the game with his career-high 23rd goal, cleaning up the rebound Thomas Vanek’s high wrist-shot, the rebound of which Roloson was unable to control.
The Sabres’ resolve and eventual overtime win were not the only normal sights in Thursday’s game against the Western-Conference Oilers—injuries too were prominent. Soon after tying the game, Afinogenov broke his wrist, while Jiri Novotny, the gritty fourth-line center, sprained an ankle after taking an Oiler hard into the boards. These injuries come right after the news that Paul Gaustad, a major impact-player in this season’s success, is out for the remainder of the season and the playoffs with a cut tendon in his lower-leg. The Sabres also played without defensemen Jaroslav Spacek, who is out with a broken hand.
